We offer students aged 16-18 years old a real insight into what it’s like to work in IT. Over the five days that you’ll spend in our Belfast office, you will get to experience a taste of everything we do here at Kainos, meet lots of our people and get hands-on experience of programming.
You’ll be assigned a mentor who will take you through various development exercises, giving you the chance to grow your skills, learn more about project management and experience some of the cutting-edge technologies that we use here at Kainos. You’ll also get the chance to put everything you’ve learned into action by creating your own web applications!
Here’s what our work experience students get up to during their week’s placement.

Five days in total, from Monday to Friday, 10am until 3pm each day. You must be able to attend all five days to secure a place.
What is the content?
What will I gain from attending?
You’ll get a real sense of what it’s like to be a software engineer. You’ll be able to chat to some professional software engineers about what they enjoy about their job and ask them any questions that you may have about what it’s like to work in the tech industry. Finally, you’ll gain some of the technical skills that software developers use daily – and have fun along the way!
How do I sign up?
To sign up for our work experience program just click the apply now button below and complete the registration details. We only have eight spaces on our scheme each week and spaces are filled on a first come, first served basis. The scheme usually fills up quickly, so we would suggest applying early to avoid disappointment. We only offer work experience at our Belfast office.
What happens if there is no availability?
Keep an eye on the calendar in case we have any cancellations. If a space becomes available, you can book it as normal. If not, please check back next September when the scheme reopens.
Is there anything I need to bring?
All you need to bring is a packed lunch for Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Kainos will provide lunch on Tuesday. Your mentor will give you all the information and instructions you need when you arrive.
Can my careers teacher come and visit me?
As each day is action packed, we’re unable to facilitate visits from careers teachers between 10am and 3pm, however appointments can be arranged outside these hours and we’re happy to provide verbal feedback over the phone.
Do I have to wear a uniform?
There’s no need to wear your uniform, casual clothing is fine.

Work Experience Student
I enjoyed the atmosphere of Kainos. It gave me a real taste of what it would be like to work in a software engineering company, which was exactly what i was looking for. People were friendly and clearly happy to be a part of Kainos.
Work Experience Student
I enjoyed learning the basics of programming. As my school does not offer computer science as a subject choice, I found Kainos Work Experience to be a great insight into Computer Science and careers related to this subject.
